Tamim Iqbal’s team Mohammedan Sporting Club have issued an update on the cricket legend after his heart attack. The former Bangladesh captain was rushed to hospital after suffering chest pains during a match and placed on life support, but the latest update is a more positive one.
The star, who played for Essex and Nottinghamshire during a spell in England, suffered chest pains during Mohammedan Sporting Club’s Dhaka Premier League fixture against Shinepukur Cricket Club on Monday. He was taken to the KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home before attempts were made to take him to another hospital by air ambulance, per ESPN Cricinfo.
He was rushed back to the initial hospital in critical condition, with reports on Monday indicating a blockage in his arteries was discovered. However, a Mohammedan official has now provided a fresh update.
“He is now better,” club official Tariqul Islam said of the 36-year-old. “He talked to his family members and also walked briefly at the hospital.”
Club physiotherapist Emanul Haque inticated the star would, all being well, be moved to another medical facility for further care. “We had to go to hospital quickly to save his life, and luckily we did that,” Haque told AFP.
Immediately after the incident on Monday, coach Montu Dutta spoke to reporters. “He (Tamim) was in good spirits during the toss,” Dutta said.
“When he felt sick, he left the field and took his own car to the hospital. The doctors there did not want to let him leave at the time, but Tamim left anyway and was arranging an air ambulance himself.”
In a separate statement on Monday, Bangladesh Cricket Board chief Faruque Ahmed gave thanks to medical staff. Ahmed is among the board members understood to have visited the star in hospital.
“We are very thankful to all the medics and specialists for their swift actions in this critical situation,” Ahmed said. “The outpouring of concern for Tamim reflects how much he is loved and appreciated by the nation.
“The BCB is closely monitoring his health and continues to remain in contact with the hospital’s medical team. The board is committed to providing every support and assistance to ensure Tamim’s swift recovery.”
Iqbal, who captained the Bangladesh one-day team between 2020 and 2023, was on the books of Essex in 2017 before leaving for personal reasons. His Mohammedan team sit third in the Dhaka Premier League after winning five times across the first seven rounds of matches, with the top six teams progressing to the end-of-season Super League format.
