Groom slammed for ‘humiliating’ bride at wedding as people say it’s ‘red flag’

Published:

During a wedding reception, one of the most popular traditions is the cake cutting ceremony. According to The Knot, the tradition dates back to the ancient Roman time, where it was a common practice to break the cake, or the bread as they used then, over the bride’s head before feeding to each other to symbolise their commitment to the relationship.

However, the cake cutting ceremony that we know of today originates from the Victorian times, where it was customary for the bride to cut the cake and hand out slices to the guests as it represented fertility. However, as the wedding guestlists grew, the groom was required to help with the cake cutting ceremony.

Now, one partner usually places their hands over the other’s as they cut the first slice of cake as a symbol of their promise to support each other and to reflect the first responsibility they complete as a married couple.

However, one of the most controversial things you can do at a wedding reception is making a mess of the cake cutting ceremony. Whether it’s smashing cake into your partner’s face, or dunking their head into the cake, it’s often seen as a big no-no.

In a video that has made its rounds on social media, with over 20.4 million views on X, a newly wed couple can be spotted counting down before cutting the cake together.

As they got the knife through the first cut, the groom decided to take advantage of the bride leaning forward over the cake and put his hand on the back of her head to push it into the cake.

While he was laughing and cheering towards the bride, who was dressed in a white dress and had cake over her face and neatly made hair, she was seemingly in shock, laughing in disbelief as she put her hand over her mouth.

The groom, who was still laughing at the prank he’d pulled on his wife, then lifted both his hands up for the bride to high-five, which she did. However now, the smile had faded from her face as she looked annoyed.

People quickly took to the comments of the viral video, most viewers were quick to take the bride’s side as they called out the groom for what he did.

“Automatic annulment,” one person commented after having watched the video. Another viewer wrote: “Nothing says ‘forever’ like tearing down your partner on day one. Solid beginning.”

“The biggest red flag here (besides doing it in the first place) is his inability to see…that she’s upset,” wrote another commenter before labelling the groom a “jerk”. Another person pointed out: “She spent hundreds on her hair and makeup…”

“Why does this tradition even exist? It’s a waste of food — and also, humiliating another is never fun,” another spectator wrote.

What do you think of the situation, is it okay to smash cake at your partner’s face during the wedding? Let us know in the comments.
