Keir Starmer hints at potential reconsideration of his decision not to grant resignation honors. The Prime Minister did not definitively rule out compiling a list of honors upon his departure from Downing Street. In 2023, while serving as the opposition leader, Starmer criticized Rishi Sunak for allowing Boris Johnson to distribute honors to his allies, deeming it difficult to justify.

Starmer had previously stated that he would not bestow resignation honors, citing alternative avenues for recognition. However, as he approaches the end of his tenure in No10, he did not categorically dismiss the possibility of nominating allies for honors.

Traditionally, Prime Ministers are permitted to recommend individuals for honors after leaving office, subject to approval by their successor and the House of Lords Appointments Commission. Notably, Liz Truss released a list of nominations after only 45 days in office, while Boris Johnson named several aides involved in the Partygate scandal.

Starmer made these remarks during his final major international summit as Prime Minister, with his official resignation expected on July 20, paving the way for Andy Burnham to likely succeed him. Starmer expressed acceptance of the decision that led to his resignation, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring a successful transition and the prosperity of a future Labour government.

Acknowledging the potential of Andy Burnham as a capable Prime Minister, Starmer highlighted their longstanding collaboration. When asked about Burnham’s suitability for the role, Starmer affirmed his belief in Burnham’s capabilities while deflecting judgment on who would make the better Prime Minister. Reflecting on his tenure, Starmer expressed his pride in leading the United Kingdom, underscoring the honor and responsibility that comes with the position.
