Three individuals have been sentenced to prison following the theft of nearly £1 million worth of weight loss medications from a healthcare distribution center in St Albans.
The theft occurred on January 24, when burglars broke into the facility on Handley Page Way and stole 79 boxes of Mounjaro valued at £944,544.89.
Mark Harding, aged 55, Peter Costello, aged 44, and Robert Townsend, aged 59, were each sentenced to five years and three months in prison at St Albans Crown Court after admitting to the burglary.
According to the police, Harding and Costello unlawfully entered the premises, disabled internal surveillance cameras, and took multiple boxes of the weight-loss drug from a refrigerated storage area. They returned with Townsend less than two hours later and stole over 70 additional boxes of Mounjaro.
The culprits were identified through phone records, CCTV footage, and automatic number plate recognition cameras. Harding’s distinctive clothing seen on CCTV before and during the burglary also linked him to the crime.
Subsequently, police executed warrants on February 11, arresting the men and recovering over £60,000 in cash hidden at the residences of Harding and Townsend.
In addition to their burglary convictions, Harding and Townsend were given concurrent nine-month prison terms for possessing criminal proceeds.
Detective Sergeant Will Daglish expressed satisfaction with the guilty pleas and highlighted the severe risks posed by mishandling weight loss drugs. He described the burglary as premeditated and emphasized the consequences faced by the perpetrators.
Sophia Malik, a lawyer from the Crown Prosecution Service, noted the elaborate planning involved in the theft and commended the collaboration between prosecution and law enforcement that led to the successful convictions of all three individuals.
