Fire chiefs are cautioning about an elevated threat of wildfires amidst the UK enduring its third heatwave of the year. Some regions may witness temperatures soaring up to 36C this week, triggering health and fire alerts. On Monday evening, the Met Office confirmed that South-east England had officially met the heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures surpassing 28C. The heat is anticipated to peak on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures exceeding 30C nationwide and potentially reaching 36C in parts of southern England. Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland could experience highs of up to 28C on Friday, with temperatures lingering in the mid-20s during the weekend.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has raised concerns about an increased wildfire risk due to the hot and dry weather. They advised against using disposable barbecues in rural areas, parks, and moorlands to prevent fire incidents. Dave Swallow, NFCC’s wildfire deputy lead and lead tactical adviser, emphasized the role individuals play in preventing wildfires, urging caution during outdoor activities to avert tragedies.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service reported dealing with multiple wildfires this week, including one caused by discarded glass at Whitmoor Common. Although temperatures are not expected to reach the extreme levels seen during the June heatwave, several locations are likely to endure prolonged hot weather. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat health alerts for the Midlands and southern England until Sunday.

Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, Steven Keates, advised the public to take necessary precautions against high UV and temperatures. Recommendations include staying hydrated, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable individuals. Water enthusiasts are urged to check water temperatures, as cold water shock can result from sea and river temperatures of 15C or lower. Water safety guidance is accessible on the Met Office’s website and app, featuring detailed beach forecasts and essential information on UV and pollen levels.
