Nigel Farage has officially stepped down as the Member of Parliament for Clacton following the Chancellor’s approval of his resignation, leading to a by-election where he plans to run again.
The announcement was made by the Treasury in a traditional manner through a press release stating that Nigel Paul Farage has been appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.
Facing renewed pressure, Farage’s decision to trigger the by-election was met with criticism as all major parties declined to participate, leaving satirical candidate Count Binface as his sole opponent.
The move came amidst mounting scrutiny over Farage’s financial affairs and ongoing investigations by a parliamentary watchdog. In response to the situation, opposition leader Keir Starmer labeled Farage’s actions as a desperate measure that has exposed him as a “complete charlatan.”
As the Reform UK leader pushes forward with his campaign, the Prime Minister suggested that Labour should field a candidate if Farage faces a second by-election prompted by parliamentary investigations.
On the upcoming by-election, Reform UK has confirmed that the writ will be moved on Thursday morning, proposing a voting date of August 6, less than a month away.
Additionally, Andrew Bailey confirmed Farage’s stance on cryptocurrencies during a meeting at the Bank of England last year. Farage’s appointment as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead, a standard procedure for resigning MPs, was accepted by a spokesperson who highlighted the absurdity of the situation.
Count Binface, the sole opponent to Farage in the by-election, has gained national attention after major parties decided not to field candidates. Binface, also known as British comedian Jonathan David Harvey, has a background in satirical productions and is now set to challenge Farage in the election.
In response to the unfolding political drama, various key figures and parties have expressed their opinions, with some criticizing Farage’s actions and others showing support for Count Binface as a potential alternative in the Clacton by-election.
