US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran, threatening further military action after a contentious exchange where he labeled Tehran as ‘scum’ and declared an end to the ceasefire.
During the NATO conference in Turkey, Trump launched a scathing attack on Iran, which had been targeted in a significant airstrike overnight, striking at least 85 times in one of the most intense bombing campaigns by the US in the ongoing conflict. Reports from Iranian state media confirmed strikes on Qeshm island, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik, resulting in injuries from shrapnel. In retaliation, Iran claimed to have targeted a US Navy headquarters and an air base in Kuwait.
A British intelligence analyst commented to the Daily Mirror, noting that the recent attacks on Iranian targets were notably larger and more forceful than previous strikes, indicating a shift towards escalation. Despite Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, there are signs that he is feeling unsettled. American forces in the region launched a barrage of missiles at Iran, including key locations like Bandar Abbas, in response to Iranian troops attacking three oil and gas tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz on the Omani side, reportedly carried out by Iran’s Islamic Republican Guard Corps.
Tehran has insisted that ships must navigate the Strait using the Iranian side, asserting control over traffic flow. Trump condemned Iran’s actions, stating they had attacked ships without justification, leading to forceful US retaliation. He expressed determination to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and criticized Iranian officials, calling them “scum” and “liars,” while dismissing the effectiveness of negotiations.
Trump outlined his skepticism towards peace talks with Iran, suggesting a lack of sincerity from Iranian officials who may misrepresent agreements reached in negotiations. He also criticized Iran for launching attacks despite being granted permission for a funeral procession for Ayatollah Khamenei, viewing their actions as deceitful and hostile.
In response to Trump’s statements, Iran has threatened to tighten control over global oil trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially disrupting it if the US engages in further attacks. The Fars News agency, closely linked to the IRGC, warned of dire consequences for US interests and allies in the event of renewed aggression from Washington.
