A school in New York was forced to evacuate as a result of bricks and columns falling from a neighboring 37-story building that was in the process of being constructed. The incident occurred in Manhattan when two structural support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors of the building buckled during the morning rush hour. Authorities discovered sagging floors between the 21st and 26th storeys.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received reports of falling bricks on 235 East 42nd Street around 8 am EDT. An emergency response was initiated, leading to the closure of nearby streets to both pedestrians and traffic. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the evacuation of a school with approximately 400 students.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and all individuals inside the building were safely located, as stated by Mayor Mamdani during a press conference at the site. Engineers are actively working to reinforce the damaged floors using drones for inspection instead of risking human safety by entering the building.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Mayor Mamdani expressed gratitude to the swift response of first responders and the calm reaction of New Yorkers. He emphasized that stabilization efforts will commence once the building is deemed secure. Fire Department Chief John Esposito highlighted the ongoing movement of the building, emphasizing the current unstable and hazardous conditions.

As a precautionary measure, a “collapse zone” has been established by the FDNY. Additionally, a frozen zone has been declared by Mayor Mamdani, encompassing the area between 40th and 45th streets, from 1st to 3rd avenues. The timeline for reopening the area and allowing evacuees to return home remains uncertain.

The developer of the construction project, Metro Loft, assured collaboration with the Department of Buildings to fully grasp the situation’s extent, prioritizing the safety of workers and the public. The building, formerly the global headquarters of Pfizer, is undergoing a transformation from offices to upscale apartments. Situated near iconic landmarks such as the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the United Nations headquarters, the building’s location adds complexity to the situation.
