Ukrainian forces have initiated their most extensive drone attack on Moscow in two years, as President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that victory in the war will come from dominating the skies above Kyiv. Over 430 drones were deployed to target the Moscow region, with 36 directed at the capital, causing significant disruptions as Ukrainian troops simultaneously struck Russian positions elsewhere. During the onslaught, Ukraine’s drone teams successfully destroyed eight of Moscow’s illicit ‘shadow fleet’ oil tankers in the sea, along with a ferry and a cargo ship connecting the mainland to Crimea. This offensive comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin faces mounting pressure due to financial constraints hindering his full-scale invasion efforts.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelensky asserted that success in the conflict hinges on strategic intelligence, declaring Ukraine’s air superiority in the ongoing battle. The frontline drones commander, Robert Brovdi, reported the successful targeting and destruction of Russian tankers, emphasizing the continued struggle for control over fuel supplies to Crimea in the Sea of Azov. Despite encountering resistance resulting in the downing of several Ukrainian drones en route to Moscow, the ensuing debris is believed to have caused substantial damage. This development poses challenges for Putin, whose unpopular war in Ukraine is further complicated by petrol shortages across the country.

The large-scale assault on Russian targets by Ukraine coincided with a deadly Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, resulting in the death of 19 individuals. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba defended the strikes as essential to undermining Putin’s financial capacity to sustain the conflict. Kuleba raised concerns about the nature of activities carried out by the vessels comprising Putin’s ‘shadow fleet,’ highlighting their critical role in generating revenue for Russia and supporting its military endeavors.

Zelensky is expected to seek urgent anti-ballistic missile protection supplies at the NATO summit in Turkey to counter Russian aggression, particularly given the challenges posed by ballistic missile trajectories. The summit also presents an opportunity for Zelensky to engage with global leaders, including Donald Trump, to underscore the escalating pressure on Putin and the need for international support against Russian incursions. As Russia’s military advances falter in Ukraine and Kyiv intensifies cross-border attacks, Putin’s vulnerability is increasingly apparent.

Zelensky’s call for European allies to provide Patriot missiles underscores the urgency of defending against ballistic threats. Despite global shortages of Patriot systems, the ongoing Russian attacks highlight the impact of Ukraine’s strategic strikes on Moscow. With Russia accusing Kyiv of ‘terrorism’ for targeting its oil refineries with drones, the conflict dynamics continue to evolve, underscoring the need for decisive international action to address the escalating crisis.
