The UK is currently experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to soar above 35C in certain regions later this week. South east England has officially met the heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures surpassing 28C, as confirmed by the Met Office on Monday.

Forecasts indicate that temperatures will continue to climb across the UK in the coming days, with more areas likely to meet their local heatwave thresholds. Southern England is projected to reach highs of around 32C on Tuesday, increasing to 33C on Wednesday and 34C on Thursday, with isolated areas potentially hitting 35C by Friday and Saturday.

On Monday, Teddington in south-west London recorded the highest temperature at 34C, according to the Met Office. While southern regions brace for escalating heat from Monday evening onwards, a north-south weather divide is expected to persist through the first part of the week.

Scotland is anticipated to experience stronger winds and rain outbreaks on Tuesday, keeping temperatures closer to the seasonal average. However, as the weekend approaches, warm air is forecasted to reach northern parts of the UK, leading to increasingly humid conditions and a heightened risk of showers or isolated thunderstorms.

The Met Office predicts a slight drop in temperatures early next week, although many areas will remain dry and warm. Deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to take standard precautions against the heat and sun.

The Met Office also highlighted that the ongoing heatwave in the UK, the third this year, is not expected to break previous records like those in May and June. While temperatures are projected to be lower than in previous months, parts of southern England could experience several days with temperatures in the low 30s, with some areas reaching 34-35C later in the week.

Amber heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for the Midlands and southern England, indicating potential significant impacts on health and social care services, with an increased risk of fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or with underlying health conditions.

Yellow heat health alerts are also in place for Yorkshire and northern England, with similar potential impacts expected. The agency cautioned about possible water-related incidents, including risks like cold water shock and drowning across England.

England may encounter “tropical nights” later this week, where temperatures might not drop below 20C, according to the Met Office. National Rail Enquiries advised train passengers to stay updated due to the heatwave, while vehicle breakdown rescue services are likely to be busier than usual.

Drivers were advised to carry ample water and conduct essential vehicle checks before traveling, especially examining tyre pressures, coolant levels, and oil levels. Tony Rich from the AA emphasized the importance of taking heat seriously and recommended precautionary measures for driving in hot weather.

The Met Office warned of high to very high UV levels and advised the public to use sun protection throughout the week. Additionally, pollen levels are expected to be high or very high in certain areas.
