Vacations provide an opportunity to explore new cultures, visit renowned landmarks, and indulge in different cuisines. However, the experience can be dampened when large crowds of tourists converge at the same destination.

Following a period of restricted travel due to the pandemic, there is a surge in people eager to resume exploring various popular spots worldwide, leading to some locations becoming overcrowded.

Edinburgh Castle in the UK has been identified as the most overcrowded landmark globally. A recent study conducted by MoneyTransfers.com in 2023 revealed the most congested tourist hotspots around the world.

According to the study, Phuket in Thailand stands out as the most densely populated tourist destination worldwide, with a ratio of 118 tourists per local resident.

Phuket, a renowned beach destination in Thailand, boasts some of the finest beaches globally, including Kata and Karon, which are highly acclaimed.

Due to its breathtaking landscapes and popularity, visitors may encounter overcrowded beaches, especially during peak seasons. Thailand’s Pattaya and Krabi also rank high as the second and third most overcrowded destinations globally.

Thailand dominates the top 10 list of overcrowded spots, followed by Greece and Turkey. Heraklion in Greece secures the seventh position on the list with 22 tourists per local resident.

Venice in Italy is not a surprise entry on the list, with a ratio of 21 tourists per resident.

Recently, Simone Venturini, the newly appointed mayor of Venice, announced plans to implement a controversial tourist fee for visitors entering the historic city.

In 2024, Venice made history by becoming the first tourist destination to introduce an entry fee, initially set at €5, for busy days from April to July. The fee later increased to €10, approximately £8.60, for last-minute visitors.

Local authorities aimed to alleviate overcrowding in the historic city and discourage visits during peak periods with this levy, as Venice attracts around 30 million visitors annually.

Currently, there are discussions to raise the entry fee to €50. Additionally, Rhodes in Greece and Miami in the US are also on the list, with over 20 and 18 tourists per local resident, respectively.
