Eight Buddhist monks lost their lives, and 13 others suffered severe injuries when a pick-up truck collided with a group on a walking pilgrimage in Thailand. The tragic incident took place at approximately 12pm local time [6am BST] on Thursday in the Mukdahan province, located in the northeast region of Thailand. Among the victims, five monks were declared dead at the scene, while the remaining three succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
According to reports from khaosodenglish.com, the pick-up truck involved in the accident was allegedly driven by an 11-year-old boy who took the vehicle onto the road without adult supervision. The collision occurred on the side of the road in Ban Na Si Nuan in the Mueang district. The driver’s age has not been officially confirmed.
Emergency responders found the monks lying on the roadway and the roadside upon arrival at the scene, which was secured. The injured monks were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
An ongoing investigation is underway as authorities strive to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The monks were en route on foot to the Don Tan district after having lunch at Wat Roi Phra Phutthabat Phu Manorom, as reported by Thai Enquirer.
