A man has refuted accusations of killing a Scottish mother on a Greek island almost two decades after her demise. The body of Jean Hanlon was discovered off the coast of Heraklion, Crete, in 2009. Even though her death was initially deemed accidental, her family persisted in demanding a reevaluation of the case, including a second post-mortem examination and the enlistment of a private investigator to uncover the truth.

The turning point occurred when entries from Jean’s personal diary emerged, prompting prosecutors to suspect her 55-year-old ex-partner of being involved in her murder. After being interrogated in January last year, the accused was formally charged again in November.

The highly anticipated trial commenced today at Lassithi Criminal Court in Crete. The defendant stated, “I am innocent. It would be unjust to spend my life in prison for a crime I did not commit.” In accordance with Greek law, the media cannot disclose the name of Jean’s Greek former partner until a conviction is secured.

During the trial’s initiation, Jean’s three sons provided testimony, with one asserting that the accused had harassed their mother following the end of their relationship, despite what he described as an amicable separation. The court was also informed about Jean’s diary, which implicated the accused.

A forensic pathologist, involved in the case since a review in 2019, informed the court that Jean likely suffered a fatal brain stem injury, possibly caused by a forceful blow to the back of her neck with a blunt object. The pathologist clarified that her injuries did not align with those typically resulting from a fall.

Jean, a former hospital secretary, had been residing in Kato Gouves, approximately 12 miles from Heraklion, for several years, where she worked in local establishments. She vanished during a night out in March 2009 after mentioning to friends that she was meeting a man at a café. Subsequently, she sent a distressing text message simply stating, “Help.” Four days later, her body was discovered in the sea off Heraklion.

Initially, the post-mortem examination concluded that she drowned. However, a re-examination in 2019 suggested she likely died before entering the water, revealing a broken neck and ribs, a punctured lung, and facial injuries.

Her family tirelessly campaigned for years to unravel the mystery surrounding her death, compelling Greek authorities to reopen the investigation on multiple occasions. Despite a 2020 broadcast appeal resembling Crimewatch yielding no new leads, an investigation in 2021 by specialist officers linked to organized crime could not uncover fresh evidence, although it indicated foul play. The case was officially reopened in June 2024 following the submission of a detailed report by private investigator Haris Veramon, hired by Jean’s son.

The suspect was initially charged in January of the previous year, but the case was dismissed. Subsequently, appeal judges in Heraklion overturned the decision in August and mandated a murder trial, leading to the suspect’s recharging in November.

Jean’s son, Michael Porter, expressed relief and hope for justice, emphasizing the enduring impact of his mother’s tragic fate. The ongoing trial, situated approximately 30 miles from where Jean’s body was recovered, is projected to span up to four days.
