Three Irish individuals tragically lost their lives in a severe collision in southern Spain, as confirmed by an Irish government official. The incident occurred on the A7 motorway near Malaga, with two vehicles colliding and one plunging down an embankment. Additionally, a fourth Irish national sustained serious injuries in the crash.
All four victims, believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s and hailing from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, were involved in the accident. Emergency responders, including firefighters and Civil Guard officers, promptly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
Robert Troy, a minister of state at the Department of Finance and TD for Co Westmeath, expressed his deep sorrow for one of the affected families, describing the news as “absolutely devastating.” He emphasized the profound impact on the families and extended sympathies to all those affected, urging support through thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
The local community, according to Troy, is also reeling from the tragedy, echoing sentiments of devastation and sadness. Minister for foreign affairs, Helen McEntee, emphasized the importance of supporting the families affected and ensuring they receive necessary assistance. She conveyed condolences and confirmed immediate outreach efforts by her department and An Garda Siochana to the families.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has acknowledged the incident and is actively engaged in providing consular support to the impacted families. While refraining from commenting on individual cases, the department is committed to assisting those affected by the tragic event.
