More than one million children in England, roughly equivalent to one in ten, were either referred to, waiting for, or receiving treatment from mental health services, indicating the significant challenges faced by young people today. According to Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza, there is a crisis in young people’s mental health that needs urgent attention.
Anxiety was identified as the primary reason for referrals, with a notable increase in demand for services related to suspected autism and neurodevelopmental conditions. The latest data revealed that in the 12 months leading to March 2025, there were 1,048,965 children actively involved in referrals to children and young people’s mental health services, marking a substantial increase compared to previous years.
The surge in referrals for conditions like autism and ADHD has raised concerns, with the report emphasizing the need to address the growing distress among young individuals. While the rise in diagnoses does not necessarily indicate a higher prevalence of these conditions, factors such as improved recognition and evolving social patterns may be contributing to the trend.
Referrals for anxiety, suspected autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions have seen notable spikes, indicating the diverse mental health challenges faced by children. With waiting times averaging 128 days and a concerning percentage of children waiting for more than two years for treatment, there is a pressing need to enhance mental health services’ capacity and efficiency.
Dame Rachel emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to supporting young people’s mental health, calling for coordinated efforts across government sectors to ensure timely and effective interventions. She highlighted the necessity for integrated services encompassing health, education, and social care to provide comprehensive support to children in need. By prioritizing collaborative solutions, the aim is to shift the focus from identifying problems to actively assisting children in overcoming mental health challenges.
