According to top legislator Jorge Rodriguez, a further 3,238 individuals have been injured and 3,142 left homeless by the disaster, as revealed in the most recent update broadcast on state television. Rodriguez, sibling of acting president Delcy Rodriguez, labeled the catastrophe as the most severe event the nation has faced in over a century.
The dual earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on June 24, occurring less than a minute apart, with the second tremor being the most powerful in the country in recent memory.
Reports indicate over 50,000 people are missing, with estimates from the US Geological Survey suggesting a potential death toll of up to 10,000. The seismic events led to the collapse of more than 250 structures following the rapid succession of the quakes, causing thousands to be trapped under debris.
Rescue teams are tirelessly scouring the rubble for signs of life, with one family recounting hearing their relative’s cries under the wreckage, holding onto hope for his survival.
Among the uplifting tales of survival is the rescue of an 18-day-old infant from the debris in La Guaira, and the miraculous birth of another baby beneath a collapsed building.
The initial quake’s epicenter was in Yaracuy state, where the rocky terrain mitigated the immediate impact. However, seismic waves traveled towards La Guaira, resulting in widespread destruction of entire streets in the coastal city.
Both US and Spanish military units have been mobilized to support the rescue operations. The US government has committed $150 million (£110 million) in aid, dispatching two warships, aircraft, and helicopters to bolster the emergency response.
President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, expressed readiness to assist Venezuela, instructing government agencies to mobilize quickly and referring to the Venezuelan people as new and valued allies. Additionally, the US Treasury Department temporarily lifted sanctions to enable the Venezuelan government to conduct financial transactions related to earthquake relief efforts.
