A young woman from the UK shared her struggle with severe food allergies, which put her life at risk due to developing new allergies continuously. Kate Hegan, 22, faced daily fear after being diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), a rare condition causing unpredictable reactions to various stimuli like food, scents, temperature changes, and hormones.

Living in Somerset, Kate, a student teacher, expressed how her black Labrador named Kenny became her lifeline by alerting her 10 minutes before potential anaphylaxis episodes. She mentioned that due to MCAS, she could only consume approximately 25 foods without risking her life, as her body reacted to a wide range of triggers, including her own bodily functions and environmental factors.

Dealing with the constant threat of severe allergic reactions, Kate shared her struggles and the impact on her daily life, including the need for caution in every activity. She revealed her worries about the possibility of each day being her last and the challenging conversations she had to have with her parents about her condition.

Diagnosed with MCAS at 18, Kate manages her condition with a complex medication regimen, including expensive antibody injections not covered by the NHS in her area. Despite the medical challenges, Kenny, her specially trained dog from Medical Detection Dogs, played a crucial role in alerting her to potential reactions, potentially saving her life multiple times.

Kate’s journey with health issues started at a young age, with various unexplained conditions affecting her well-being. After enduring years of health struggles and misdiagnoses, she finally received a diagnosis of postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), which explained her heart rate abnormalities and fainting spells.

The presence of Kenny in Kate’s life marked a turning point, allowing her to regain her independence and pursue her dreams of becoming a primary school teacher. She expressed deep gratitude for Kenny’s life-saving alerts and credited him with giving her a new sense of purpose and hope for the future.
