A shocking incident captured on camera reveals the tragic event when an irresponsible driver struck his close friend while driving recklessly as if it were a game. Mehmet Celik, aged 24, collided with his friend Thomas Rees with his vehicle, causing Rees to sustain a serious brain injury after being asked to pick him up from a night out. The aftermath of the collision was documented with photos presented in court, displaying Rees lying on the ground following the impact in Swansea, south Wales. The court learned that the duo had a long-standing friendship, having shared educational experiences since their school days.

Rees, aged 23, had requested Celik to give him a ride home after a night out, but Celik’s actions took a dangerous turn. Celik, while speeding past their meeting point, executed a risky maneuver by reversing at a wide junction just as Rees was crossing the road to enter the car. The collision was forceful, knocking off Rees’ shoes and causing severe injuries. Passersby, including Celik, rushed to assist, with Celik visibly distressed at the scene before Rees was airlifted to the hospital.

Medical reports revealed the extent of Rees’ injuries, including brain bleeding, lung blood clot, broken breastbone, and fractured calf bone, leading to an extended hospital stay. Celik’s driving was found to be reckless, as he was traveling at 36mph on the wrong side of the road in a 20mph zone, resulting in significant damage to his vehicle.

Celik pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through dangerous driving. The court heard a statement detailing Rees’ challenging recovery journey, profoundly affecting his life and capabilities. In his defense, Celik’s lawyer acknowledged the grave error in judgment, attributing it to a misguided attempt to display bravado that tragically backfired. The judge emphasized the severity of the incident, highlighting the irresponsible behavior that led to life-altering consequences for both individuals.

Ultimately, Celik received an 18-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving, along with a four-month nightly curfew, 300 hours of unpaid work, and a two-year driving ban. The court’s decision served as a somber reminder of the grave repercussions of reckless driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the roads.
