King Charles III was informed about the harrowing experience of the Afghan Refugee Women’s cricket team who were smuggled out of Afghanistan to escape the Taliban’s threats. Meeting the team members at Clarence House in London, the King inquired about their journey following the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan.

The team, operating outside the bounds of the banned women’s sports in Afghanistan, is currently in the UK for a series of matches. Expressing his relief that they could pursue their passion, King Charles III engaged with the players, discussing their escape and the challenges they faced. The players shared their frightening journey, navigating through Taliban checkpoints with the constant fear of not surviving.

One player, Firooza Amiri, described the ordeal as difficult and terrifying but emphasized their determination to persevere. The King commended their resilience and dedication, expressing his delight in seeing them pursue their dreams.

During the meeting, the King also conversed with the players about their linguistic skills and experiences in Afghanistan before their departure. The team members highlighted the limitations faced by women in their country and the significance of their representation on a global platform.

The initiative to evacuate the team was spearheaded by a group of Australian women, including former cricketer Melanie Jones, sports manager Emma Staples, and sports lawyer Catherine Ordway. Through a coordinated effort, the team was safely evacuated with the assistance of the Australian Army’s Special Air Service.

Despite the challenges they have overcome, the team continues to train and live in various countries, with a shared determination to advocate for the rights of women in Afghanistan. Their resilience and commitment to the sport have been acknowledged and celebrated by King Charles III, who commended their strength and spirit.

The King, a cricket enthusiast himself, shared lighthearted moments with the team, reminiscing about his own cricket experiences. The meeting, originally planned for the gardens at Clarence House, was moved indoors due to the heatwave, where the King received gifts from the players.

The Afghan Refugee Women’s cricket team’s journey is a testament to their courage and determination in the face of adversity, inspiring hope and empowerment for women in Afghanistan and around the world.
