The UK’s Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning covering six regions, cautioning about thunderstorms. Predictions suggest heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes that could lead to significant disruptions on Thursday evening from 6 pm to 11:59 pm.

While many areas may avoid the worst impacts, the Met Office alerts that certain locations might experience intense thunderstorms emerging after a period of hot weather. This brings the risk of travel delays, flooding, and power outages. Driving conditions may become hazardous due to spray, standing water, and hail, potentially causing longer travel times for drivers and bus passengers.

Accompanying the storms are strong winds that could damage buildings and temporary structures, with lightning strikes posing risks to a few properties. There is a possibility of short-term power outages and service disruptions for homes and businesses in affected areas as the storms progress.

The official Met Office website advises seeking shelter in a secure enclosed space during the storms and not near trees or structures prone to lightning strikes. Additionally, it recommends moving to lower ground if on an elevated area. Thunderstorms typically form when warm air rapidly rises into the atmosphere following prolonged hot weather or during a heatwave. As the sun heats the ground, the air above it rises, cools, and condenses into water droplets, forming clouds that can develop into cumulonimbus clouds capable of producing hail, thunder, and lightning.
