Bridget Phillipson and Liz Kendall confronted Kemi Badenoch following the Conservative leader’s accusation of the Education Secretary as a “spiteful class warrior” during a session of PMQs. Badenoch faced criticism for making derogatory remarks about Phillipson, who was raised on a council estate in Washington, North East.

Phillipson, accompanied by Tech Secretary Liz Kendall, coincidentally encountered Badenoch after the PMQs vote, where Kendall addressed Badenoch’s behavior. Badenoch reportedly retorted to Phillipson, stating, “I will continue to highlight your spiteful nature.” In response, the Education Secretary, visibly upset, retorted, “The public will soon uncover your true self,” as Badenoch walked away.

During PMQs, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle reprimanded Badenoch for lacking “respect” towards fellow members. Badenoch’s spokesperson later stated that she had no intention of apologizing for her language during the session.

Badenoch referenced a poll by the National Education Union during the session, indicating that no teachers believed Phillipson was performing exceptionally in her role. Badenoch criticized Phillipson’s policies, mentioning a decrease in the number of teachers despite taxing private schools to fund additional teaching staff. She concluded that appointing Phillipson as Education Secretary was a mistake.

Keir Starmer defended Phillipson, expressing pride in her dedication to social mobility. Starmer emphasized the importance of education for underprivileged children and criticized the opposing party for their lack of understanding.

Speaker Lindsay intervened during PMQs when Badenoch accused Starmer of feeling “betrayed” by his MPs and labeled Labour ministers as “traitors and deserters.” Following a derogatory comment by Badenoch, Lindsay urged members to use respectful language to set a positive example for constituents.

Criticism of Badenoch escalated post-PMQs, with Deputy PM David Lammy emphasizing the significance of a state-schooled Cabinet in the current Labour government. Various Labour figures condemned Badenoch’s conduct, highlighting her vindictiveness towards Phillipson.

Trade minister Chris Bryant recommended a more magnanimous approach in such situations, contrasting Badenoch’s behavior. Labour MP Uma Kumaran criticized Badenoch for her demeanor, citing the need for respect towards elected officials.

Badenoch also faced disapproval from other political parties, including Lib Dem MP Tim Farron, who condemned her for being disrespectful and offensive.
