Donald Trump has reported that six individuals have been apprehended for allegedly causing harm to the recently renovated $14 million Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The refurbishment, which has been marred by issues, risks overshadowing America’s upcoming 250th anniversary festivities.

The US president attributed the damage to vandals, pointing to a significant 350-foot gash in the fresh paintwork. He announced that the government would release images illustrating the alleged destruction as authorities rush to complete repairs before the scheduled celebrations.

Following the makeover that involved painting the base of the century-old Reflecting Pool in what Trump called “American flag blue,” problems such as algae blooms and the peeling off of sections of the new coating have emerged.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Trump persistently blames the deteriorating condition of the Reflecting Pool on vandalism, although he has not presented any concrete evidence to support his assertions. He claimed that the damage, including cut areas and slashes along a 350-foot length, was likely orchestrated with deliberate intent, possibly under the cover of darkness.

The Associated Press confirmed the arrest of an individual who touched the peeling paint, expressing a desire to inspect the new layer before being instructed to stop by a park worker. Subsequently, National Guard members and Park Police have increased patrols in the vicinity after Trump reiterated his belief that vandals were behind the damage.

During a press briefing upon landing in Pennsylvania, Trump mentioned that the Department of the Interior would disclose photos and videos of the alleged vandalism. He also suggested that unknown individuals might have introduced fertiliser into the pool, causing the algae issue, although there is no proof of such actions.

Meanwhile, workers have been observed pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool in an effort to combat the algae. Experts have noted that the chemical could potentially act as a paint remover and that the dark lining of the pool might be exacerbating the algae problem by absorbing more heat from sunlight, thus warming the water.
