A senior caregiver, Malek Alshabi, was caught on CCTV attempting to sexually assault an 85-year-old dementia patient in a care home in northern Lincolnshire. This incident marked his second offense in a care facility, following a previous conviction for neglecting a 93-year-old patient.
During the court proceedings at Grimsby Crown Court, Deputy Circuit Judge Timothy Clayson expressed concern over Alshabi’s reemployment at a care home and urged a thorough review of the circumstances. Alshabi confessed to the attempted rape on March 16 this year.
The victim, who had been residing in the care home since the previous July and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia, was described as requiring constant assistance with daily tasks, including meals and personal care.
Alshabi was apprehended at his residence in Sheffield after the CCTV footage was reviewed, despite his denials of any wrongdoing during police questioning. His criminal history included prior convictions for wounding and neglect, leading to a suspended prison sentence.
The court learned that Alshabi’s offenses were committed while under the influence of alcohol, with a history of intoxication-related incidents. His defense barrister acknowledged his client’s remorse and characterized him as a devoted family man.
Alshabi was sentenced to nine years in prison, with an additional three years on license due to the perceived threat he posed. He was also subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely. Furthermore, he was restricted from working with vulnerable individuals through inclusion on the Disclosure and Barring List.
Judge Clayson expressed dismay over Alshabi’s ability to secure employment at another care home despite his criminal record, emphasizing the need for improved oversight in such hiring practices.
