Andy Burnham has promised to amplify the voices of towns like Makerfield that have been overlooked by Westminster for years. The Labour Leadership contender criticized politicians for neglecting Northern communities and ignoring their concerns. In an assurance to Mirror readers, Mr. Burnham pledged to advocate for good employment opportunities, affordable housing, and secure neighborhoods for all, ahead of the significant by-election on June 18th.

Challenging Reform’s Robert Kenyon, who has faced criticism for disrespectful comments about women, including targeting Carol Vorderman, the Greater Manchester Mayor is determined to make a difference. Reflecting on his decision to leave Parliament almost a decade ago to become Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr. Burnham emphasized the importance of decisions being made closer to home in places like Wigan, Winstanley, and Worsley Mesnes.

Expressing pride in the accomplishments in Greater Manchester, including bringing the bus network under public control and advocating for the region during the Covid-19 crisis, Mr. Burnham highlighted the ongoing struggles to secure essential services. He emphasized the need for towns like Makerfield to be heard and understood by policymakers in Westminster.

Asserting that Westminster has long ignored towns like Makerfield, Mr. Burnham vowed to be a strong voice for the community if elected. He emphasized the urgency of addressing key issues such as good employment opportunities, affordable housing, safe streets, and prospects for young people.

Mr. Burnham warned that the ongoing political situation could lead to increased polarization akin to the divisive politics seen in the United States. Stressing the importance of unity and effective governance, he called for a more inclusive approach to political decision-making.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Mr. Burnham’s campaign has gained support from figures like Steve Coogan, who joined him in engaging with local residents in Makerfield. The race between Reform and Labour is expected to be intense, with the emergence of other parties like Restore potentially impacting the outcome. Despite challenges, Mr. Burnham remains focused on unifying the Labour Party and addressing the critical societal issues facing the nation.
