Almost half of all vehicles on the road could be harbouring an issue that could cost used car sellers up to £400 if not addressed, warn experts. Ignoring minor problems with a vehicle may seem like a money-saving strategy in the short term, but accumulated issues are likely to backfire.
A dashboard warning lights system indicating a host of problems is unlikely to attract buyers, leaving drivers facing a costly service bill. Modern cars are equipped with sensors throughout, with the dashboard warning light system highlighting potential problem areas. These could range from issues with power steering, exhaust, engine failures or tyre concerns.
Steven Edwards, editor at used car platform MOTORS, suggests that the cost of a service can vary depending on the type of vehicle, with some owners potentially facing bills of up to £400.
He said: “The brake, engine, airbag, coolant and low tyre pressure warning lights are just a few of the dashboard symbols drivers will be familiar with.”
He added: “While warning lights should be addressed whether you’re selling your vehicle or not, their presence could seriously affect a car’s value. Taking your car in for a full-service before putting it up for sale allows you to address these issues and get them fixed – boosting the value of your car and reassuring buyers.
“Unlike an MOT, which checks a car’s roadworthiness, a full-service checks over the various aspects of the vehicle from electrics to tyres, identifying any underlying problems including dashboard warning lights.
“The cost of a full service will depend on the size of your vehicle, with smaller models averaging around £170 and larger makes hitting the £400 mark. Remember to keep a physical paper copy and receipt for your service should you need to produce it on the day of sale.”
Previous research from dealer group Robins and Day has highlighted that an astonishing 46 per cent of adults tend to dismiss dashboard warning lights in their car, reports the Express.
A third admitted that they’ve delayed addressing potential issues because they’re worried about the expected high costs of repairs.
Price comparison authority, BookMyGarage, reports the average cost of a full service as being £182.40, but cautions that depending on the engine size, you might see this price climb closer to £280.
Expect a comprehensive service to last about three hours, during which time nearly all critical components of the vehicle are inspected.
Moreover, some services also take care of minor repairs, like changing oil and air filters, and perhaps even swapping out spark plugs.
