The United States was swept up in soccer fever during the World Cup as the host team triumphed 4-1 in their first match against Paraguay. A constellation of celebrities, including English icon David Beckham, Tom Cruise, Katy Perry, Justin Trudeau, James Corden, Paris Hilton, and Leonardo DiCaprio, gathered in Los Angeles to witness the spectacle.

Meanwhile, fan zones in host cities attracted tens of thousands of supporters. In Kansas, local musical performances entertained a crowd of up to 25,000 people, creating a memorable experience for home fans. Additionally, Latino fans celebrated Mexico’s victory in their opening match alongside the local supporters.

Luis Pacheco, an employee at the Slope Sports complex where England is training, expressed excitement about the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the tournament. His wife, Tara Tamburello, a native of Kansas, shared her hope for either Mexico or the USA to emerge victorious, acknowledging the long-awaited arrival of the World Cup and the city’s eagerness to be hospitable hosts.

Raul Aguirie, a bar manager in Kansas City, welcomed numerous fans at his establishment ‘Dos Lokos,’ where festivities included dancing, singing, and enthusiastic support for the opening weekend of the World Cup. Anticipating more thrilling nights ahead, he predicted an extraordinary tournament, emphasizing the potential advantage Mexico could have, especially if facing England.

Teacher Simon Ellis, originally from Stockton-on-Tees and now residing in Colorado, visited Kansas to support his daughter and soak in the sporting atmosphere. Expressing pride in Kansas as a host city, he highlighted the community’s strong affinity for English football, noting the excitement surrounding the upcoming matches.

As he celebrated his 60th birthday, Simon reflected on his journey from the UK to the US and his wife’s thoughtful gift of tickets to the fan fest in Kansas. Immersed in the festive ambiance, they embraced the opportunity to experience the World Cup excitement firsthand.
