Patients start with a 1.5mg dose, gradually increasing to 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg over time. The MHRA confirmed that those currently on a 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can switch to a 25mg daily tablet. The drug is prescription-only and will be available privately in the near future, but NHS use is pending evaluation.
The semaglutide tablet, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, should be taken whole on an empty stomach with water after an eight-hour fast. Food or drink should be avoided for at least 30 minutes post-ingestion to optimize absorption.
Approval was granted based on a trial where adults taking the pill alongside diet and exercise lost an average of 17% body weight over 64 weeks, compared to 3% for those on a placebo. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea and constipation.
