Prince William is planning to implement significant changes in the management of the Royal Family’s property holdings once he ascends to the throne. The Prince of Wales, aged 43, is considering reforms such as prohibiting the subletting of royal residences and ending the practice of non-working royals residing in palaces rent-free. These adjustments are part of a comprehensive review of the family’s accommodation policies, echoing actions taken by King Charles III in the past.

In light of recent revelations about his uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor subletting properties at below-market rates, Prince William is placing a high priority on addressing these issues. Reports indicate that he is determined to scrutinize the operational aspects of the monarchy to ensure its relevance in contemporary times.

Particularly concerning for Prince William is the public perception of non-working royal family members benefiting from favorable housing arrangements. These concerns have been underscored by a recent report by the National Audit Office, which highlighted instances where individuals like Prince Andrew were profiting from rental properties while enjoying subsidized accommodations.

The report disclosed that Prince Andrew, despite paying a nominal rent, had invested significant funds into the upkeep of his leased property at the Royal Lodge in Windsor. Additionally, it revealed that Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie pay rent for their dwellings in St James’s Palace and Kensington Palace, respectively, funded by the King’s personal finances.

The Royal Household, supported by public funds, provides free accommodation to 11 working royals across seven residences in exchange for their official duties. Following the release of the report, a Palace spokesperson expressed gratitude and emphasized the commitment to transparency in managing royal properties. The spokesperson clarified that property arrangements are tailored to various factors ensuring appropriate utilization based on location, tenants, and purpose.
