The Mirror has initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to address the tragic deaths of 33 children who drown in England annually, a toll described as equivalent to a whole classroom of children lost.

Campaigners are labeling drowning in the UK as an “epidemic” and a “national emergency,” emphasizing the urgent need for the Government to take immediate action. The recent record-breaking heatwave from May 24th to the 31st resulted in 19 deaths from water-related incidents, with 13 being children and six adults, including a 19-year-old. Many of these fatalities are suspected to have been caused by cold water shock.

In the past year, 31 children lost their lives to drowning, nearly half of the previous year’s total, in just one week. Concerns are raised that more lives could be at risk before the summer holidays if proactive measures are not implemented promptly.

Various organizations, including The Royal Lifesaving Society UK, RoSPA, and the RNLI, have united with the Mirror in this campaign. Olympic champions Becky Adlington and Tom Dean are also lending their support to the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety initiative.

Simon Haycock, a father who tragically lost his 16-year-old son Sam to drowning, is at the forefront of the campaign, emphasizing the critical need for immediate change to prevent further tragedies. The data reveals that children in the most deprived areas are at a higher risk of drowning, with boys being twice as likely to drown compared to girls.

The call for action has gained momentum, with political figures like Mr. Pitcher MP advocating for a national water safety awareness campaign to avert more fatalities. Professor Mike Tipton highlights the severity of the issue, noting that drowning surpasses other causes of death like bicycles, fires, floods, and knife crimes.

Efforts are underway to improve water safety education and equip individuals with essential skills to navigate water hazards effectively. The focus is on preventive measures, acknowledging that every drowning incident is preventable with proper education and safety measures in place. The aim is to create a culture of water safety to safeguard lives and prevent future tragedies.
