A judge has been removed from his position after accusations surfaced that he sent a “highly sexualized image” to court staff, although he asserts it was merely an attempt to be friendly.
Andrew Simpson, a former solicitor turned district judge, faced an investigation following multiple complaints from colleagues. He was found guilty of gross misconduct for “abusing his position.”
Allegations against Andrew included engaging in overly familiar and unprofessional behavior by contacting staff through social media and text for non-work related matters. He also sent images from social events, one of which was deemed highly sexualized. Additionally, he faced accusations of unwanted physical contact and sending inappropriate emails from his judicial account.
During the investigation, Andrew admitted to some of the claims but maintained he had no improper intentions, stating that he was trying to support and uplift staff during challenging times.
Although Andrew argued he was consistently polite and friendly with court staff, acknowledging some behaviors were inappropriate, the investigation office determined his actions were seriously misguided, despite his claimed positive intentions.
Despite a recommendation for a reprimand considering Andrew’s remorse and assurances of better conduct, the Lady Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor overruled and dismissed him. They cited repeated inappropriate behavior, abuse of authority, causing distress to staff, and tarnishing the judiciary’s reputation.
The Judicial Conduct Investigations Office stated that Andrew’s conduct fell well below expected standards, constituting gross misconduct and a severe breach of integrity. The decision to remove him from office was deemed an appropriate and proportionate sanction.
