Downing Street has acknowledged that messages sent by Keir Starmer on WhatsApp are automatically deleted, potentially causing the loss of conversations with Lord Mandelson. This revelation came to light as only a limited number of text messages between the former US ambassador and the Prime Minister were disclosed in the Mandelson files presented to Parliament. These documents were made public following demands by MPs, leading to the release of over 1,400 pages of material related to Mandelson’s contentious appointment, which raised concerns about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The extensive collection of private WhatsApps and emails exposed Lord Mandelson’s significant influence within the Government. It was revealed that he communicated with the cabinet, advocated for his personal interests, and criticized the Prime Minister. This disclosure, known as the Mandelson files, marks one of the most significant revelations to Parliament since the Iraq War inquiry, costing taxpayers £1 million.

Regarding the use of disappearing messages, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman defended their use, stating that they are permissible as long as they do not hinder record-keeping or transparency. Downing Street emphasized that despite utilizing the disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp, the Prime Minister adhered to the regulations concerning the release of the Mandelson files, providing the required information in compliance with the humble address.

Government guidelines highlight the necessity of properly recording and preserving significant information and decisions, raising concerns about the implications of automatically deleting messages. Among the documents released, only one page of exchanges between Labour leader Keir Starmer and Lord Mandelson was found, consisting of nine iMessage text messages. However, messages from cabinet minister Nick Thomas-Symonds and former Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney were inaccessible due to stolen phones, potentially leading to the loss of crucial information related to the controversial appointment.

In other news, Andy Burnham has ruled out the possibility of calling an early general election if he were to become Prime Minister. The Greater Manchester Mayor is currently running for Labour in the Makerfield by-election to re-enter Parliament, setting the stage for a potential challenge against Keir Starmer. Amid speculation about a snap election to bolster his mandate, a spokesperson confirmed that such a move is not on the cards upon entering Downing Street.
