Pictures revealing the interior of a luxury motorhome valued at £124,000, acquired by former SNP leader Peter Murrell, have been unveiled. Murrell, who previously served as the party’s chief executive, was seen at the High Court in Edinburgh today in handcuffs following his admission of embezzling over £400,000 from party funds. During a 30-minute presentation, Advocate depute Alan Cameron KC detailed how Murrell utilized SNP funds over a decade to sustain an extravagant lifestyle.

The finances in question primarily originated from membership dues, donations, and contributions from party members and other benefactors. The Crown Office disclosed images of the motorhome, complete with Molton Brown toiletries, which was confiscated by the police from Murrell’s mother’s residence with only four miles on the odometer.

Described as a “van rather than a motorhome” in the invoice, the vehicle was exclusively associated with Murrell and not utilized or witnessed by any other party member or staff. Additionally, a robotic lawnmower valued at £3,000 was found during a search of Murrell’s residence, mislabeled in financial records as legal expenses.

Various unauthorized purchases totaling more than £42,000 were made on Amazon, with deliveries predominantly directed to Murrell’s home address or the SNP headquarters. Murrell manipulated accounting records and falsified invoices to conceal his illicit activities while accumulating a range of items, including luxury watches, fountain pens, and silverware.

Court documents indicated that Murrell fabricated a false invoice amounting to £57,500 to acquire an £81,277 Jaguar I-Pace, subsequently selling it for £47,378. He also diverted £16,489 from SNP funds towards purchasing a £32,989 Volkswagen Golf. Additionally, he made minor purchases like hand cream, office supplies, and food items, including a £67 toilet seat.

Murrell’s admission of guilt has prompted a closer examination of Nicola Sturgeon, who denies any involvement in his criminal actions. Sturgeon, Scotland’s former First Minister, emphasized her lack of responsibility for Murrell’s misconduct during media interviews. Although Sturgeon was briefly detained and interrogated as part of the SNP financial probe, known as Operation Branchform, Police Scotland confirmed that no charges would be brought against her.

Calls have been made for an independent inquiry into the SNP’s financial affairs following the revelations. Murrell, appearing in court attired in a dark suit and tie, acknowledged his lawyer as he was escorted to the dock. He has been detained in custody pending sentencing scheduled for June 23.
