An inquiry has determined that a Russian drone was responsible for a strike on a residential building in Romania.

President Nicusor Dan of Romania revealed the results of an investigation into a drone striking an apartment building in Galați. He emphasized the technical report’s clear conclusion that the drone involved was a Geran-2 drone of Russian origin, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial.

The drone incident occurred when it crashed into a block of flats in Galati, near Ukraine’s border, during Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Analysis of the drone’s components and characteristics matched those of previously crashed Geran-2 drones in Romania.

President Dan stated that Romanian specialists concluded, based on substantial technical evidence, that the drone was of Russian origin. The drone’s trajectory was tracked by radar in Romanian airspace before crashing onto a building in Galati, causing a fire, minor injuries, and evacuations.

Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as a serious violation of NATO airspace. The investigation also revealed similarities in manufacturing markings, materials, and technology used in the drone, confirming its Russian origin.

President Dan emphasized the gravity of the incident and held Russia solely responsible. He pledged to inform NATO allies and EU members of the findings and vowed to enhance security at the eastern border to protect citizens.

NATO confirmed the drone’s Russian origin, condemning Russia’s aggression. President Dan announced measures to be taken in response to the incident, including requesting additional anti-drone capabilities from allies.

Despite attempts by Romanian F-16 fighter jets to intercept the drone, they could not engage it without risking civilian safety. The EU Commission President condemned Russia’s actions and announced preparations for additional sanctions.

Russia’s aggressive tactics in Ukraine, including missile strikes and drone attacks, have escalated tensions. Putin criticized Romania for its conclusions and actions, calling for objective data to be provided before passing judgment.

The situation highlights the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with repercussions extending beyond borders.
