A tragic incident occurred as a woman passed away during a Brazilian butt lift procedure. Barbara Laura Souza Félix, a 27-year-old sales worker from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, underwent the surgery to remove fat from her stomach and back, transferring it to her buttocks. Unfortunately, medical staff observed a sudden decline in her pulmonary ventilation levels during the grafting stage, leading to a fatal cardiac arrest.
Despite efforts to revive her for over an hour, Barbara was pronounced dead at the scene. Doctors suspect that a pulmonary embolism, possibly triggered by fat, was the likely cause of her death. The police launched an investigation into the incident, and Barbara’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the André Roquette Legal Medical Institute.
Barbara, who was single with no children and had no known health issues, was described by her relatives as a vibrant and responsible individual who cherished life. Her family expressed concerns about the procedure and the response time following the tragedy. The surgeon’s lawyer defended the pre-operative assessments and clinical protocols that were adhered to.
This unfortunate event has drawn attention to the risks associated with gluteal fat grafting procedures, commonly referred to as Brazilian butt lifts, which have been under increased scrutiny globally due to higher complication rates. The clinic where the procedure took place is facing scrutiny after a similar incident resulted in the death of a 39-year-old mother in 2021.
Barbara’s death is currently being treated as a suspected medical incident and is under active investigation by the authorities in Minas Gerais.
