Health experts are cautioning about the rise of two diseases in Spain and other parts of Europe, advising UK holidaymakers to take preventive measures this summer. Recent data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) revealed a significant increase in gonorrhoea cases across Europe, reaching 106,331 in 2024, marking a 303% surge since 2015.

Simultaneously, cases of syphilis more than doubled to 45,577. Spain reported some of the highest infection numbers in Europe, with 37,169 gonorrhoea cases and 11,556 syphilis cases in 2024.

Gemma Nice, a sex and relationships coach at condoms.uk, highlighted that holiday behaviors often differ due to the absence of routines and lowered inhibitions. Factors like alcohol consumption, spontaneity, and the carefree holiday mindset can lead to riskier sexual activities compared to usual behaviors at home.

She emphasized the misconception that pregnancy prevention and STI protection are the same, underscoring that condoms remain the only contraception method offering protection against both pregnancy and STIs. Many travelers underestimate the prevalence of symptomless STIs, which can unknowingly spread between partners over time.

Experts cautioned against complacency towards condom use and emphasized the importance of open discussions around testing and protection. The ECDC flagged widening gaps in testing and prevention as contributors to the surge in infection rates across Europe, urging individuals to use condoms with new or multiple partners and seek testing if symptoms arise.

According to experts at condoms.uk, several common holiday behaviors can heighten the risk of STIs while traveling, especially when combined with factors like alcohol, spontaneity, heat, and reduced inhibitions.

Gemma highlighted common holiday-related STI risks, stressing the importance of simple preventive measures such as packing protection, proper condom storage, and open conversations about sexual health. She advised checking expiration dates on condoms and lubricants, emphasizing that safe sex practices should not be compromised during holiday encounters.

Ensuring safe sex during holiday experiences involves planning ahead and carrying protection, offering a straightforward way to safeguard both oneself and one’s partner.
