The Canary Islands have been witnessing a rise in protests in recent times. Local residents are increasingly frustrated with the overwhelming influx of tourists to the sunny Spanish archipelago, citing outdated regulations that favor property developers over community needs. This has led to challenges in securing affordable housing and low average salaries for the Canarians.

In addition to these grievances, the islands are facing a critical issue of coastal erosion at an alarming rate. According to a report by SOS Costas Canarias, about 2.5 miles of coastline vanish each year, with various structures like hotels, housing estates, and marinas being built on the disappearing land.

Concerns are also raised about the extensive development along the coastlines, with nearly 18% of the territory within 500 meters from the sea already developed across the islands. Notably, some areas exceed 40% development, with Lanzarote and Gran Canaria reaching up to 43%.

Tourism dominates the living space on the Canary Islands, accounting for almost 20% compared to around 4% on the Spanish mainland. Several municipalities have more tourist accommodations than permanent residents, indicating a heavy reliance on tourism.

Experts warn that the islands’ biodiversity is at risk due to minimal protection of natural habitats by local authorities. They point out the continuous expansion of tourist resorts over beautiful landscapes each year, leading to concerns about resource management and environmental impact.

The conflict between preserving the islands’ natural beauty and expanding tourist accommodations is highlighted by experts, emphasizing the urgent need to halt further development on undeveloped coastal land. The relentless construction not only destroys irreplaceable habitats but also heightens the risk of local flooding, putting thousands of residents in vulnerable positions.

Legal experts criticize the lack of proper legislation to protect public interests in urban planning and environmental matters, highlighting the economic model on the islands as one based on land destruction and speculation. Calls are made for stricter regulations and enforcement to safeguard the Canary Islands’ natural environment and communities.
