At least 15 individuals have lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries following a tragic truck accident. The incident occurred when a truck carrying iron rods and additional passengers overturned on a major highway in central Bangladesh early Monday morning. The crash, which took place in the Soratoil area of Tangail district, 83 kilometers northwest of Dhaka, was a result of the driver losing control around 5 a.m., as confirmed by local police chief Fuad Hossain.
The truck, transporting hitchhiking passengers from Dhaka to the northern region ahead of the Eid al-Adha festival, flipped over, leading to the unfortunate deaths of 15 people at the scene. The accident happened in the Jogarchar area on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway. The identities of the deceased and injured, who were trapped under the iron rods and vehicle, have not been immediately confirmed.
Photographs from the scene depict the truck on its side with bystanders nearby. Despite the position of the truck, it did not appear to have sustained significant damage in the collision. Most of the passengers were day laborers en route to reunite with their families for the festival.
Witnesses reported hearing a noise and rushed to the scene to rescue trapped passengers. Tragically, road accidents claim thousands of lives in Bangladesh annually due to poor enforcement of traffic regulations, substandard road conditions, and unskilled driving.
