“Know the Rules: Universal Credit and Summer Travel”

Universal Credit recipients looking to take a summer vacation must be aware of the regulations set by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) regarding their travel plans.

Individuals can travel outside the UK for up to one month without affecting their Universal Credit entitlement, but it is essential to inform the DWP in advance. This notification can be done by updating your online journal with any changes or by contacting the Universal Credit helpline.

While abroad, claimants are still required to adhere to their claimant commitment, which may involve continuing to search for employment. Those in the intensive work search group are typically expected to dedicate 35 hours per week to job hunting.

Exceptions apply, such as extended stays abroad for medical reasons or in the event of a close relative’s passing, which can allow for longer periods outside the UK.

Universal Credit comprises a standard allowance as the base payment, with additional elements like support for children or incapacity adjustments considered. Deductions may apply for savings or outstanding debts owed to the DWP, and there is a taper rate that reduces the Universal Credit payment as earnings increase, with some individuals eligible for a work allowance.

Detailed information on additional elements and deductions affecting Universal Credit payments can be accessed on the GOV.UK website.
