The Mirror has received a prestigious award at the esteemed Press Awards. Ros Wynne-Jones, our Real Britain editor, was honored with the Excellence in Diversity prize for her compelling Island of Strangers series. This series delves into how different communities in Britain come together despite challenging circumstances. Judges commended her for amplifying the voices of those often marginalized, emphasizing the importance of such storytelling in today’s journalism landscape.

Ros, alongside Mirror colleagues John Domokos, Claire Donnelly, and Maryam Qaiser, embarked on a journey across the nation seeking stories of hope in struggling areas. Their travels took them to places like Middlesbrough, where they explored initiatives like the Flower Patch, a project uniting refugees and locals through gardening. In Cardiff, they visited a cabaret group for seniors in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods.

Accepting the award, Ros expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create the Island of Strangers series, highlighting the trust placed in them by communities in Rotherham, Cardiff, Liverpool, and Stockton-on-Tees. She emphasized the importance of showcasing stories from communities that have bridged divides, revealing a different narrative of unity and resilience in Britain.
