A man was fatally shot in an incident described by authorities as an “underworld attack” and has been identified as Alai Ahio, aged 28. The shooting occurred on Tuesday night in Canley Heights, where Ahio, a former associate of a Sydney-based rap group, sustained critical injuries. He later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital.
Following the shooting, two men, including Ahio, arrived at Liverpool Hospital with multiple injuries. While Ahio underwent surgery and unfortunately passed away, the other man, aged 32, remains hospitalized in a serious condition with a neck injury. Additionally, two more men, aged 23 and 22, presented themselves at Fairfield Hospital in serious condition shortly after. They have since been transferred to different medical facilities for treatment.
Further investigations revealed that Ahio and the other wounded men were acquainted with each other. Authorities suspect the involvement of two additional individuals in the incident, who reportedly fled the scene in a white SUV. Although police are exploring potential underworld connections, specifically related to a group known as the “coconut cartel,” no definitive links have been established yet.
Law enforcement has secured crime scenes at the location of the shooting in Canley Heights and at an address in Saint Johns Park where the vehicles transporting the injured men were found. Detective Superintendent Craig Middleton emphasized that the attack appears to have been targeted, and measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the coming days. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
Middleton described the incident as a bold and violent attack, indicating that organized crime leads are being pursued, although it is still early in the investigation. Fairfield City Police Area Command, with support from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, is actively conducting inquiries into the matter. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
