A mother of a victim who died from a single punch is advocating for tougher penalties after her son was fatally struck by a Royal Marine who felt offended by a question. Ann-Marie Yilmaz expressed immense grief over the loss of her son, Cemal John Yilmaz, who was hit by Joseph Jones, an individual he didn’t know, during a night out. The blow rendered Cemal unconscious, causing him to hit his head on the pavement, resulting in fatal injuries.

Cemal, aged 39, was swiftly taken to a hospital but sadly passed away four days later due to his injuries. Jones, 23, from Wolverhampton, admitted to causing Cemal’s death and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for manslaughter after initially being arrested for grievous bodily harm and murder.

Ann-Marie criticized the leniency of Jones’ sentence, expressing disappointment that he is set to be released in August next year after serving only 17 months. She highlighted the injustice of the situation, emphasizing that individuals who commit such violent acts should face stricter consequences.

The incident occurred when Cemal, out with friends at a local pub, encountered Jones and other Royal Marines outside a bar in Exmouth. Despite Jones admitting to manslaughter and being informed that he would serve two-thirds of his sentence, Ann-Marie and her family were appalled by what they perceived as a light punishment for a severe crime.

Ann-Marie described Cemal as a kind and vibrant individual who was deeply loved within his community. She highlighted the devastating impact of his loss on the family and the lack of support they received from the Royal Marines following the tragedy.

The family has been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the handling of the case and has called for greater awareness of the dangers associated with a single punch leading to death. Ann-Marie emphasized the need for accountability and justice in such cases to prevent future tragedies.

Despite the community’s overwhelming support at Cemal’s funeral, Ann-Marie expressed her deep grief and sense of loss, highlighting the disparity between the consequences faced by Jones and the lifelong impact of Cemal’s absence on their family. She called for a reevaluation of the lenient sentence and for greater recognition of the lasting impact of such senseless acts of violence.
