An outbreak of a highly contagious disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s eastern Ituri province has led to at least 80 reported deaths. Health officials are working to ramp up screening and contact tracing efforts to contain the disease, which was first announced on Friday with 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases. Local residents in Bunia, the capital of Ituri, expressed their concerns over the ongoing deaths and continuous burials.

The country’s health minister confirmed eight laboratory-confirmed cases, including four deaths, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a less common variant of Ebola. This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the country since its first appearance in 1976. Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that spreads through bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, or semen.

The index case of the current outbreak was a nurse who passed away in Bunia, showing symptoms consistent with Ebola dating back to April 24. Despite the country’s experience in managing Ebola outbreaks, logistical challenges persist due to the vast distances between affected regions and ongoing conflicts. The outbreak has been confirmed in three health zones within the Ituri province, including Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu.

As of the latest update, there were no specific travel advisories issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office regarding the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, UK citizens were advised to avoid traveling to certain parts of the country due to political instability, with ongoing conflicts in North and South Kivu. The situation in the region remains highly unpredictable, leading to limited support from the UK government outside of Kinshasa in the event of unrest.
