Officials have confiscated approximately 70,000 illegal hair-loss treatments over the past five years, according to alarming statistics. Border Force agents seized 65,194 unauthorized doses between 2021 and 2026, with a significant portion confiscated just last year. This concerning data, obtained through Freedom of Information laws from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), coincides with nearly half a million Britons receiving baldness medication monthly.
Anastasia Lesnikova, an expert in aesthetics products who compiled the information, cautioned that a surging demand is nurturing a thriving black market. She expressed concern over the possibility of numerous illegal hair-loss treatments circulating undetected despite tens of thousands being intercepted before reaching consumers.
Most illicit hair loss medications are apprehended at the border due to lacking authorization for sale in the UK and potential inclusion of harmful substances. Nearly all available tablets in the country are prescription-only and necessitate evaluation by a healthcare professional. The MHRA is urging both medical practitioners and patients to report suspected illegal medicines and adverse drug reactions via the agency’s Yellow Card scheme.
According to the government’s Drug Safety Update, around 14 to 16 percent of British men use hair-loss treatments, with approximately 400,000 private prescriptions issued monthly. As baldness is viewed as a cosmetic issue, NHS coverage is unavailable. Notably, celebrities like Elon Musk, Pete Davidson, and Joe Rogan are rumored to have utilized these medications.
Unlicensed hair-loss pills pose a risk of severe health complications. Instances of erectile dysfunction and suicidal thoughts were reported last year among individuals taking dutasteride. Influencers on platforms like TikTok frequently endorse this medication, with videos showcasing regrowth garnering millions of views.
The MHRA’s latest data release coincides with the agency’s recent seizure of illicit medicines valued at approximately £4.6 million. Additionally, over 130,000 doses of unauthorized drugs and steroids were discovered being distributed via mail order.
