eBay has introduced a significant update for individuals engaged in trading card transactions. The popular online marketplace is launching its Authenticity Guarantee service specifically for trading cards in the UK. Under this new service, sellers must send eligible trading cards to eBay’s authentication facility, where Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) will conduct a physical inspection.
Upon completion of the assessment, the card will be dispatched to the buyer with an e-tag containing a unique QR code attached to the card’s protective packaging. This QR code allows buyers to access information about the card and its authentication status by scanning it.
Initially, the authentication service will be available for eligible trading cards, including collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards, priced at £500 or higher. By June, the eligibility will expand to include all trading cards priced at £500 and above. Notably, the Authenticity Guarantee service is already in use for other categories like trainers, luxury watches, and handbags, without any additional cost to buyers.
According to eBay, trading cards remain in high demand, with popular brands such as Pokémon and Formula 1 leading the way. Cards like Charizard ex and Ancient Mew are among the most searched items, with Lando Norris ranking as the most sought-after British athlete on the platform in 2025.
One of the most valuable trading cards sold in the UK was a rare 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare #4 BGS 9 MINT, which fetched £16,500. Adam Ireland, Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables at eBay, emphasized the importance of trust in the collectibles world and highlighted the enhanced trading experience the Authenticity Guarantee service offers for high-value card transactions.
eBay recently finalized a $1.2 billion (£890 million) deal to acquire Depop, a second-hand clothing app, from competitor Etsy. This move aims to attract a younger demographic and drive long-term growth for the online marketplace. The transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the year, with Depop retaining its brand, platform, and culture.
eBay’s CEO, Jamie Ianonne, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Depop, focusing on leveraging its unique brand and community to benefit both buyers and sellers. Peter Semple, Depop’s CEO, echoed this sentiment, stating that the partnership with eBay will accelerate their marketplace in the US and beyond, aligning with their shared values of sustainability and community building.
