Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have participated in naming a baby kangaroo currently under the care of an Australian zoo. Collaborating with Robert Irwin, the son of the renowned conservationist Steve Irwin, the young royals selected a name for the new joey at Australia Zoo. Robert revealed the chosen name, Cwtch, for the adorable eastern grey kangaroo joey in a social media post, explaining that “Cwtch,” which means cuddle in Welsh, was the ideal name due to the joey’s affectionate nature and close bond with its mother.
Expressing gratitude to Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte for their contribution, Irwin, who manages Australia Zoo in Queensland and supports Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, highlighted the significance of the royal children’s involvement in naming the baby kangaroo. He invited visitors to Australia Zoo to meet Cwtch and emphasized the zoo’s conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding Australia’s wildlife and habitats.
During a previous royal visit to Australia in 2014, Prince George had the opportunity to meet a bilby named George at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Irwin, surrounded by kangaroos, emphasized the crucial role these animals play in maintaining Australia’s ecosystem by managing grassland health and reducing fire risks.
Online reactions to the naming of Cwtch were overwhelmingly positive, with many praising Irwin and expressing admiration for the young joey. Social media users commended the royal family’s involvement and expressed excitement about the prospect of the Wales Family visiting the wildlife sanctuary. Overall, the public reception to Cwtch, the newly named kangaroo, was full of admiration and affection.
