A family has issued a critical alert following the untimely death of a mother of three due to an undiagnosed heart condition just five weeks after delivering her baby.

Cathy MacGuinness, aged 40, was urgently taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney on Easter Sunday after experiencing a cardiac arrest at her residence. Despite spending close to three weeks in a medically induced coma, she tragically passed away on a Saturday evening.

Survived by her partner, Sebastian, and their three children – Zoe, aged seven, Rosie, aged three, and newborn Goldie – Ms. MacGuinness’s demise has spurred her family to advise everyone, especially busy mothers, to be diligent about their health and not overlook any subtle symptoms.

Unbeknownst to her, Ms. MacGuinness was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that leads to heart enlargement and inefficiency in pumping blood. Her family believes that if she had been diagnosed and receiving appropriate treatment, she would still be alive.

Gillian Binchy-MacGuinness, the sister-in-law, lamented that Cathy’s death was preventable if her symptoms had been addressed promptly. She emphasized the importance of not disregarding symptoms, particularly for women, and taking care of one’s well-being.

Symptoms of dilated cardiomyopathy encompass fatigue, shortness of breath during physical exertion or while lying down, swelling in the legs, ankles, or abdomen, palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, and reduced ability to exercise.

Ms. Binchy-MacGuinness highlighted that Cathy attributed her symptoms to the demands of being an active mother. She stressed the message for everyone, especially women, not to ignore symptoms and prioritize self-care.

Describing her brother-in-law as remarkably strong for his daughters, Cathy was affectionately described as a radiant presence who illuminated every room she entered. Her final moments were in a hospital room adorned with artwork, photos, messages, and origami from those who cherished her.

A close friend, Joanna Allen, praised Cathy’s ability to truly understand others, achieve her goals, and uplift those around her. Her family, especially her partner and children, were the center of her universe, and her love extended to her extended family, whom she cherished deeply.

A fundraising initiative initiated by Joanna has garnered over $150,000 to support Cathy’s children as she did not have life insurance. Contributions can be made by visiting the donation page provided.
