A 27-year-old American nurse, Sarah Danh, fell critically ill with acute liver failure while on her honeymoon in Japan, necessitating a medevac flight back to San Antonio, Texas. Thankfully, there are positive signs of her recovery, as shared by her family members.
Despite being in a coma after her hospitalization in Japan, Sarah has started to show signs of improvement, according to her uncle, Khang Le. She remains on a ventilator but has begun to take weak breaths on her own and has displayed slight responsiveness, such as nodding faintly in acknowledgment when her mother spoke to her.
Sarah, who works as a labour and delivery nurse at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, had recently married her partner of seven years, Luke Gradl, in a dream wedding in Houston’s Spring Branch. The couple then embarked on their honeymoon in Tokyo in April, where Sarah’s health suddenly deteriorated, showing symptoms like jaundice, vomiting, fever, body aches, and hepatic encephalopathy.
Luke Gradl expressed his shock at the unexpected health crisis, mentioning that there were no indications of any issues during their wedding. Sarah, who had become a nurse just before getting married, received overwhelming support from her family and well-wishers through a successful GoFundMe campaign to cover her medical expenses in Japan.
Upon her return to the U.S., medical examinations revealed that Sarah had suffered a stroke and bilateral brain damage. However, subsequent tests offered hope, suggesting that some of the brain damage might be reversible, sparking renewed strength and optimism among Sarah’s loved ones.
The positive developments have uplifted Sarah’s family and friends, providing them with hope that she may be gradually emerging from the coma.
