A young woman who has a sun allergy shared her experience of suffering severe symptoms within seconds of sun exposure. Jennifer Broyden, 24, has an autoimmune disease that causes her immune system to attack her muscles and skin, resulting in the sun allergy.
Jennifer described how her skin quickly burns, breaks out into rashes, and sometimes blisters when exposed to sunlight. She experiences a range of symptoms including burning sensations, nausea, dizziness, elevated heart rate, excessive sweating, and overheating. These reactions can lead to fatigue and muscle weakness.
In 2021, while pursuing her master’s degree, Jennifer developed the sun allergy as a complication of her dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease characterized by muscle weakness, pain, and a specific skin rash. Her skin has become extremely photosensitive, making sun exposure unbearable and triggering symptoms like rapid muscle weakness, mobility loss, painful rashes, and fatigue.
Despite initial misdiagnoses by several doctors attributing her symptoms to stress or overexertion, Jennifer’s condition worsened until a specialist correctly identified it as dermatomyositis in December 2021. Exposure to sunlight exacerbates her condition, with even brief exposure of 15 to 30 seconds causing skin burns, blisters, and peeling.
Jennifer had to make significant lifestyle changes, giving up activities like beach visits and outdoor running. She now meticulously prepares for outdoor excursions by applying high SPF sunscreen, wearing UV-protective clothing, gloves, hat, and sunglasses, and carrying a UV umbrella for extra protection. She avoids sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm and takes precautions even while driving to minimize exposure.
Managing her condition involves infusion therapies and immune-suppressing medications. Jennifer has adapted to her new reality, finding ways to continue enjoying activities she loves while prioritizing her health and safety. Despite the challenges, she has embraced her journey, built a supportive online community, and found a deeper sense of purpose through her experiences.
