A monument honoring the late Queen Elizabeth has been revealed on what would have been her 100th birthday. Situated in London’s St James’ Park, the monument pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and her lifelong dedication to public service, as stated by the architect.
The statue portrays Elizabeth II in the early years of her reign, adorned in the robes of the Order of the Garter, inspired by a renowned painting by Pietro Annigoni. Renowned sculptor Martin Jennings is crafting the bronze sculpture.
Unveiled on Tuesday, the design of the statue was showcased to the Royal Family at the British Museum. King Charles praised the monument as “fantastic,” while Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh described it as a fitting depiction of the Queen as a young woman.
Despite positive feedback from the Royal Family, some fans criticized the design online, deeming it “boring” and lacking resemblance to the long-reigning monarch. Calls were made to revert to the original concept of depicting the late Queen on horseback.
Advocates for the equestrian portrayal argued that it would capture the heroic image associated with the Queen’s presence on The Mall over the years. Despite the online backlash, Sculptor Martin Jennings reported a warm reception from the King upon viewing the sculptures for the first time. The completed memorial, standing at seven meters tall, is slated for inauguration in 2028.
