Britain’s former defense secretary has cautioned that the country’s heavy reliance on the United States is no longer sustainable. Lord George Robertson emphasized that the UK’s ties with Washington are unlikely to revert to normalcy, even post the departure of Donald Trump from office. He highlighted the shifting global landscape, particularly the rising focus on China and skepticism towards globalization, indicating that the US is likely to adopt a more transactional approach in its foreign policy regardless of the White House occupant.
During a speech at Chatham House, Lord Robertson urged the British government to increase defense spending in light of growing global instability. He stressed the need for the UK to develop greater autonomy in military matters, criticizing the belief that the US would always come to the rescue in times of crisis, which has resulted in a weakening of the UK’s defense capabilities. Lord Robertson underscored that the current level of military dependence on the US is untenable.
The longstanding special relationship between the UK and the US has been strained recently, particularly after Keir Starmer resisted Trump’s pressures to participate in a conflict with Iran. Trump’s criticisms of NATO and provocative demands, such as acquiring Greenland, have also strained relations with allies.
Lord Robertson, a key figure behind the Government’s Strategic Defence Review, publicly criticized Keir Starmer’s administration for its complacency on defense matters. He urged Britain to reduce its historical overreliance on the US for defense.
The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee has recommended that the UK abandon any sentimental notions of an enduring special relationship with the US. Instead, they suggest a rebalancing of relations with Washington and a strengthening of ties with European nations as a safeguard against an unreliable ally.
Despite the concerns raised, the US ambassador to London, Warren Stephens, affirmed that the UK remains America’s closest ally. He reiterated the US commitment to supporting Europe’s freedom and security through collaboration with the UK for the protection and prosperity of both nations.
In the face of modern world threats, characterized by complexity, the ambassador stressed the importance of readiness, cooperation with allies, and continuous investment in collective security to effectively counter these challenges.
